Last month I experimented with shooting the Milky Way using a long exposure. The results gave me an insight into the challenges of astrophotography, including the deviation between what the eye sees and the camera records, especially once post production is taken into account. One issue is sensor noise at long exposures and Brendan Davey from Australia has been testing various models to see how they perform. There are some surprises. one of which for me was the relatively poor performance of the Nikon D500 at longer exposures, despite its mind boggingly high maximum ISO. The Fuji X-Pro2 appears to do well, but there is a suggestion of some additional processing under the covers.
