While I was at the trade show held as part of the recent The Societies' Convention, there was one stand which was getting a lot more attention than anyone else's. Canon's. By comparison, everything was relatively quiet for Sony, Fuji, Olympus and Pentax which were the other main manufacturers present. Even if you do not bother to read the rest of Thom Hogan's latest post, which is a rehash of his usual message, the table at the top which shows DSLR sales in Japan over the past few years makes interesting reading. Canon is increasing its dominance in its home market.

Of course, that table excludes mirrorless models which continue to be outsold by DSLRs. In a second article, Hogan lists market positions for that segment in a second article. Despite having a more modest mirrorless range, Canon has already reached second place there. It looks as though the future will be Canon's unless the other manufacturers can come up with an effective strategy to combat their strongest competitor.

It is worth noting that Canon has achieved this mainly using sensor technology which some consider inferior to the Sony ones deployed in most other cameras, mainly in respect of dynamic range. Now that Canon has made an improvement in that area with its latest models, I do wonder what the other companies can do.
Canon vs the Rest
