Creative Cloud Updates

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 16 Jun 2015, 08:20

Adobe has updated Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC, but Lightroom 6 will not get the new features. Already the perpetual licence version of Photoshop, CS6, is not getting the new functions introduced for Photoshop CC, only ACR support for new cameras. Now for the first time there is disparity between the purchased and leased versions of Lightroom. It remains to be seen whether Lightroom 6 will be enhanced at a later date; a lot of new cameras have been announced recently, so version 6.1 cannot be far off although it is by no means certain that this will include the missing features*.

* I am doing my Raw presentation at another club tomorrow evening and thought that I had everything ready, but will now have to revisit the slides courtesy of Adobe. :o

I've held off from updating my purchased copy of LR5 as I'm consideing moving to Adobe's Photography plan. Looks like I'll need to make my decision sooner rather than later now.

It depends how much you really want the new features introduced with the latest version. Other than the performance improvement* and the new brushes for the Graduated Filter and Radial Filter masks, there is not much I find compelling in the latest version, although that might change once I have investigated the newly added features.

* Which is currently unavailable to me due to an incompatibility with the driver for my graphics card. Grrr.

I have been trying to make sense of Adobe's statements on the latest update, which are not quite as clear as they could be. I suspect that is due to the company wanting to avoid making an explicit statement that Lightroom 6 is not getting the new features introduced for PS CC and LR CC. The updates are part of ACR 9.1 and while the perpetual licence version of LR moves on to version 6.1, this only appears to include bug fixes together with support for new cameras and lenses.

This is the relevant announcement from Adobe: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal ... raphy.html

One welcome move is the improvement to X-Trans support, with Adobe saying that it is continuing to collaborate with Fuji to refine its processing of Raw files from cameras with these sensors. This is mentioned in the list of bug fixes for PS, but not for LR. I cannot think that Adobe would do it for one application but not the other, although that is not entirely certain. This is Adobe, after all, and it has a mixed record when it comes to implementing updates, something which was especially apparent when it introduced Creative Cloud.

As an addendum to my earlier post, I have just come across this article from Thom Hogan who is both confused and unimpressed by what Adobe is doing. I am not alone, it seems.
