On your latter point, with Canon's recent multi-layer patent plus their announced triple digit megapixel SLRs I do wonder if they are going to dip their toes in the foveon-flavoured waters in the next year or two. Sigma themselves up-market the number of megapixels based on the multiple layers and I wonder if Canon are doing the same?

Sigma says that multi-layer sensors require more processing power, causing issues for power consumption and heat dissipation, so Canon might be going down the conventional route.

Most commentators say that Sigma's claims of 3x resolution are not justified, but the level of detail is equivalent to a conventional Bayer sensor with twice the number of megapixels.
