I collected my well travelled camera up from CameraWorld this afternoon and at the moment everything is hunkydory. The camera switches on and off, and takes pictures, which is all I ask. There is a video mode, apparently, but I have no idea how or or even if it works. Although it was the image stabiliser unit which was at fault, it is integrated into the sensor and functions by moving the sensor to compensate for camera shake. This meant that the sensor had to be replaced as well, which means that it would probably have been an expensive repair had I been footing the bill. Prior to the failure, the camera had been making a whirring noise, which was probably the image stabiliser getting out of kilter. All is now silent again. Other than that, some adjustments have been made, no doubt due to the replacement sensor, and the camera has been serviced and cleaned.
Hopefully the camera will behave itself from now on.
