Seven or eight years ago I considered buying the original Canon 100-400 lens, but even then the design looked so old fashioned that I thought it must be due for imminent replacement. The Internet also abounded with stories about the trombone action sucking in dust and the bearings seizing up. I decided to pass and eventually bought a 300 f/4 prime and 1.4 extender instead. Which goes to show that if you wait long enough, Canon might actually produce the gear you really want. The question is, as I have postulated in the past, whether DSLRs have enough of a future to make it worthwhile investing in the new lens.
