I am not entirely sure what to make of the top shot, particularly when looking at a low res JPEG, but based on some of the included images the judges appear to have been in an esoteric mood this year.
The show has moved from the National Theatre to the Waterloo Station mezzanine and runs from 1 December 2014 to 31 January 2015.

I thought the winner was a bit meh - I had essentially the same shot from my trip to Glencoe and binned it
The competition is so blighted by cheating and dubious winners it seems to get utterly slated by people online, particularly some well known landscape photographers.
I do like the idea it isn't some overly saturated purple sunset shot though.

That's £10k down the drain, then.

Given the subjective nature of judging, any competition regardless of level is going to attract criticism. LPOTY is not alone in experiencing problems and last year there were some red faces when members of the public spotted manipulation in the winning image which had gone unnoticed by the judges. I believe that once the shortlist of finalists is in place the organisers now expect to see the original Raw files, which is what already happens in nature competitions.
I have always enjoyed the LPOTY exhibition and even if I do not like all the images, the winning shots never look overblown.

I finally made it to Waterloo Station to take a gander at the exhibition and initial impressions were not good. The standard of photography is as you would expect, but the location is not a conducive environment to viewing images. The lighting is provided by the standard illumination at the station and does not do the pictures any favours. The show is also split across two areas at either end of the mezzanine floor, which is not ideal either. In the event, I did not see all the exhibition as I unexpectedly bumped into my sister and we went off together for a chat. Network Rail, which owns the station, is one of the competition's sponsors and having the show at Waterloo feels very much like a cost saving measure. It costs a minimum of £10 to enter and if I had one of the winning shots I would feel cheated and disappointed at the way they have been displayed. The previous venue at the National Theatre was much better than this.
