I'm sure everyone has heard about the recently advertised blue & black striped dress that caused an internet sensation when it was recognised a particular image could be seen in different colours by different people. sometimes at the same time. Here's what I think is quite a good article behind the probable reasons for it (they analysed the image with Photoshop):

Show the importance of getting the white balance right, and the effect different backgrounds may have if you don't.

I've always had my doubts that even 'normal' people (ie those without colour blindness) see colour the same way.

Hubby, by the way, is red/black as well as reg/green colour blind. This is not unusual and I can't understand why more manufacturers don't realise that, as 90% of battery chargers are black / dark grey, with red, orange and/or green lights. Bob hasn't a clue if any of his batteries or gadgets are charged. Canon are one of the good guys though... their chargers do have red lights, but they flash at different rates and then stay on when the battery is fully charged. Simples !

I have to confess I'm quite a bit red-green colour-blind myself. Never been a real problem, though I admit it's a bit boring/embarrassing to look at paint charts and find a number of greens and reds look all the same. It may even been useful in my first job in an analytical chemistry lab where there was a particularly tricky titration point which had a key colour change that I could catch consistently, unlike everyone else.

The new Nikon D7200 has been launched today and one of it's incremental improvements over the D7100 is to have double the number of preset white balance settings (6) available.

So many different factors to account for with colour, I guess that another reason why some people prefer black & white.

Colour blindness is as much about hue as it is about colour... Bob cannot only not see red berries against green leaves on a tree for example, but they appear the same shade of grey so he doesn't see the contrast which might tell him they are different in colour. It's only when he gets up close he can see the outline of the berries.

In my other life as a target rifle shooter... we were both shooting in a competition on a range where the target markers were numbered alternatively red on black, black on red... Bob just couldn't see any of the numbers, so before each shot he had to check to make sure he was shooting on 'the fifth target from the left' instead of 'target 15'. Unfortunately he got it wrong a couple of times and cross shot onto my target... And no, they weren't better shots than mine... !!
