According to this article by Thom Hogan, camera and lens designers have no interest in photography and do not use the products they create, instead regarding the process merely as an intellectual exercise. The inference is that this leads to poor decisions about usability as those involved have little idea about how purchasers end up using their cameras and issues are left unadressed.
