Nikon's Free Offer

It's in the US only, but the company is offering a free maintenance service to some owners of its cameras. According to Thom Hogan, the offer appears to be restricted to early D800 and D800e models, which were known to have a number of manufacturing faults. Nikon, as secretive as ever, is not saying why it is doing this. The company is not known for its altruism and this exercise goes beyond anything it has done previously, so the suspicion is that it is bringing defective cameras up to the correct specification. As Hogan says, if this is the case then Nikon is not getting any credit, but we have plenty of examples where Nikon has been loathe to admit mistakes of any kind.

Some more from Thom Hogan on his analysis of what Nikon is up to in the States. Nikon says that it is a marketing exercise, but if this is indeed the case in some instances it is having the opposite effect when owners become disgruntled about being omitted. It appears that Nikon struggles to do anything without at least one of its feet getting in the way of its objective.
