M43 Goes Long

One of the advantages of the MFT format is the sensor's 2x crop factor, which gives an as yet largely unrealised potential* for the development of some long telephotos that can remain very compact. Olympus already has a 40-150 lens, equivalent to 80-300, with a constant f/2.8 aperture which is surprisingly small for what it is. Now Panasonic has announced a forthcoming 100-400 f/4-6.3 bearing the Leica name which it reckons can be handheld. Prices have not yet been divulged and I do not expect it to be cheap, but it will certainly cost and weigh less than a comparable full frame monster.

* The longest lens currently available is the Panasonic 100-300, an okay performer optically at the shorter focal lengths but something of a disaster at the long end when focussing is none too speedy either.
