Another Broken Adobe Promise?

When it introduced Creative Cloud, Adobe made a commitment to continue Raw support for Photoshop CS6 and no mention was made that this would be limited in any way. Now the company has announced that the next update will be the last. Personally, given its track record, I did not expect Adobe to support a legacy product indefinitely and the surprise for me is that it has persisted so long, two years to be precise. That is an unusually long period for Adobe to maintain a consistent policy. I would not be so sanguine if I had made a buying decision based on Adobe's announcement at the time that continuing with CS6 was to allow customers the choice between a perpetual licence and the subscription model.

I suspect they kept it ambiguous while they waited to see how the subscription approach fared. Now it seems to have been grudgingly accepted by many/happily accepted by more, I can see from their POV that there is no reason to support CS6. As you say, they have always discontinued support of older versions as time progressed so I can't see how this should surprise people :)

Given how cheap the subscription model is (cheaper than actually buying a copy) and the tools they add are generally quite useful, any form of reasoned objection is on pretty weak ground now.

If I recall correctly, Adobe only said said that it would continue to support CS6 without any mention of timescales, whch would be where any ambiguity lay. I am now waiting for it to increase the price it offered to owners of Photoshop from CS3 onwards. It's something which it said it would not do, but I am sceptical given the track record of previous announcements.

Just seen on DPReview that the ACR 9.1.1 update, the last one for CS6, has now been released.

Thom Hogan's view, which both reinforces my own opinion about Adobe's stated commitment to products and adds a few extra considerations.
