I have to confess to not thinking about it, but the video does show something remarkable - workmen actually working. If roadworks were subject to the same intense activity, there would not be the need to cordon off so many miles of trunk roads for years on end.

I commute via London Bridge and worked between Christmas and New Years and there was a huge amount of engineers on the tracks on the approach. Yes, alot of trains were cancelled - particularly to Brighton and south coast - but when you realise they are completely rebuilding a mainline station whilst still keeping it open it is impressive.

The work this time around was on the northern side of the station through which South Eastern services run and they would have been suspended in totality for the duration, as happened last Xmas when the other side of the station used by Southern was closed. The reason why trains to the south coast did not run this year was due to the engineering works at Purley through which they pass. That so much was achieved in so short a period with minimal closure of a principal facility is remarkable and shows what can be done given sufficient will.
