I saw this from Kirk Tuck recently. When the topic came up in the "Gossip" thread I thought it worthy as being a discussion point in its own right. He makes the interesting point that lenses are not upgraded simply to improve optical performance, but there are other considerations such as reducing manufacturing costs. The advent of mirrorless cameras with features such as focus peaking means that some manual focus lenses are increasing in popularity, yet still remain affordable.
