Taking Photographs

In yet another fascinating article by Mike Johnston of "The Online Photographer", he discusses different approaches to taking photographs. Despite the wealth of information on the Internet and numerous books, I cannot recall anyone else discussing the topic in this much detail. It is a thought provoking essay, backed up by many insightful readers' comments. That said, it might require multiple readings to get the most out of it. For anyone serious about improving their photography, it is worth taking the time to comprehend what has been written.

FWIW, the approach descibed by Eamon Hickey in the featured comments is the one which most closely matches mine. What works best for you?

On this forum, we can learn from each other by describing how we each tackle our photography. After all, that is the intention of having the forum, a resource we can all use and to which we can make contributions. It was never meant to be "read only", but a dialogue. What I have found is that the very act of writing something for publication or use in a presentation forces me to think about the subject. The process benefits not just others, but me as well. And what works for me will work equally for others.

The introduction to the article concerns the connotations of the word "shoot". The author lives in America where the proliferation of firearms is a major issue, so "shoot" raises sensitivities for some. In fact, Mike Johnston recently had to withdraw an article which had "shoot" in the title due to the volume of negative comments he received. He is well aware of the issues and is seeking to avoid a repeat of the situation.
