Canon vs Nikon (and Sony?)

According to this post by Thom Hogan, in the US Canon is living up to its name and aiming its big guns* at Nikon. Sony might be in its sights as well. As the camera market shrinks, there might be more of this type of behaviour as each company fights for sales.

In another post, Thom Hogan has analysed the most recent CIPA figures for 2016. These figures record global sales and indicate that the camera market is still in decline. That might be partly attributable to the earthquake in Japan earlier this year which interrupted some production, Sony sensors for example. Possibly the effect was limited. There does not appear to have been a shortage of camera equipment for sale. It would explain why Canon feels the need to be more agressive towards the competition.

There have been a number of recent launches of high end cameras at prices considerably greater than their predecessors. Canon 5D IV, Olympus E-M1 II, Fuji X-Pro2 and XT-2, Nikon D500 and anything by Sony for example. Arguably only the E-M1 II and X-T2 represent price increases. The Canon's price in dollars is the same as the original 5D, but is being sold at a premium in the UK. The D500 did not replace anything as Nikon neglected that segment of the market after the D300 went out of production. Fuji was optimistic about the prospects for the X-Pro1 at launch, despite its flaws.

The question is whether high prices can be sustained in a declining market. Fuji seems to have its doubts if those frequent cashback offers are any indication.
