365 Project?

Shooting and publishing a photo a day for a year? Seriously? Yes, seriously. If you want to fast track improvements to your photography skills, it's a tremendous way to do it. I did one a few years ago and the investment of time and effort is still paying dividends today. It's something to think about as the new year approaches.

Based on my own experience, I can endorse everything the author of this article has to say.

Besides, 2017 is an excellent year for such a project. 2016 was a leap year, so that is one less photograph to produce. ;)

The author of the article is a friend of mine :) Helen's professional life gives her a lot of photographic opportunities as she's always travelling around the country, she has her City of London churches project to keep her going - she and her other half are also both passionate about WWII aviation and live very close to Duxford which they visit regularly too.
My own 365 project lasted three and a half years, during which time my photography really improved a lot. I heartily recommend it as a way of developing skills and learning to see everything around you in a different light (pun intended ; )

If a 365 does not appeal, how about a photo a week? To add variety, each week could be themed. Over on PetaPixel, there is a suggestion for a 2017 proect with a different challenge each week. As the author says, completing the year cannot help but improve your photography. Posting the results to social media will also allow you to see how others have tackled that week's topic and provide further inspiration.

The real achievement in something like this is lasting the course, not the images you obtain. Even if the shots do not always turn out as you would have wished, you will have learnt something. Failure can often be a better teacher than success. The thing is, though, the shots will come and by the end of the year there will be some you are really pleased with. You could well be surprised at how many there are. Images you would not have got had you not been participating in something like this so that you were actively thinking about the topic, finding something to photograph. Most importantly, you wil lhave developed as a photographer and broadened your range. An experience from which you wil benefit for many years to come.

If you want a greater challenge than shooting a shot a week on a prescribed theme, here is one for every day of the year. Good luck everyone, whatever form your projects for this year take.
