I am taking a wild guess here, but I suspect most people here will not be rushing out to buy Fuji's new medium format camera.

Impressive it might be, but it is really intended for hardcore professional use although inevitably some will find their way into the hands of enthusiasts.



DPReview has an interview with Fuji which is of interest to those who want to know more about the development of the camera and Fuji's other new products. The image which caught my attention is the one above, which shows just how much bigger than full frame the sensor in the GFX is. It is the same Sony sensor which is used by Pentax, Phase One and Hasselblad. That both Fuji and Hasselblad have been able to incorporate into a camera body which is around the same size as a high end DSLR is no mean achievement.

I'd definitely be interested/tempted if I was going to make the switch to a Fuji system completely. Then again, I generally prefer to wait for the 2nd gen of any new tech to make sure they iron out the kinks.

For me, it is not a system in which I would want to invest and 50 MP is overkill when I rarely print anything larger than A3. If it were my only system, I would also find it too restrictive in terms of AF speed and continuous shooting. The X-Trans cameras are a more practical proposition for everyday shooting and 24 MP is more than sufficient for my needs.

Fuji's stand at the recent CP+ show in Japan was so popular that they had to introduce an airport style queuing system. It seems that Fuji has hit a sweet spot with photographers and there is strong demand for both the GFX and XT2.

I think the large print sizes are only part of the appeal for high MP cameras, and a larger sensor has other benefits I'd be interested in too. That said, unless I start making serious bank from my photos the "accountants" will never let me get a fuji

Surprised AF speed & continuous shooting speed is a dealbreaker for you though, given the types of things you favour shooting?

Agreed, but those advantages come at a high price and I suspect that the law of diminishing returns applies when comparing the alternatives.

I did say, in response to your comments about switching totally to Fuji, that I would not want the GFX as my only system. Granted it would not be an issue for much of my photography, but I do shoot other genres occasionally and prefer to have the option.

Mind you, as you say, it is all academic this side of a lottery win. Even if I wanted one, it would get past the accountant.
