I subscribe to three magazines. My favourite is definitely Black and White Photography. During the past year, long time editor Elizabeth Roberts retired and Mark Bentley has taken over. Curiously, he does not have the title of editor but the change has made the content more accessible. The magazine concentrates on contemporary photography and some of Roberts' choices were at the more alternative end of the spectrum. There are some good regular columnists such as Eddie Ephraums and Tim Clinch who always contribute worthwhile editorial.

Some of the content, reviews and techniques in particular, is published free of charge on the website which gives an idea of style. What you miss, though, are the many articles about photographers and photography which feature in the magazine. I have met some of the editorial team and know the editor, which is how I got Croydon CC included in the regular "Meet the Club" feature last year when we had our 130th anniversary.

I tend not to spend quite as much time with that one but there is always something of interest. There has been a regular feature about Quintin Lake's walk around the coast of Britain but as he completed the trip last September that series will be concluding shortly.

We were given free copies and it included an article by Mark. One of the accompanying photos had been taken with a medium format film camera! It was a Pentax 67 if I recall correctly, so at least the SLR bit was apposite.
