One possible way to judge the appeal of an image is how much someone is prepared to pay for it. This is a list of the 19 most expensive photographs and it has some surprising inclusions. For me, number 12 was the biggest eye opener. Apart from breaking the "rule" of not allowing the subject space to move into, which might or might not work depending on your viewpoint, $1,248,000 for a photo of a photo in a newspaper? Really?
