Digital Image of the Year Competition - 25 June 2014

Postby Mike Farley » Wed 11 Jun 2014, 10:47

The competition to find the digital projected image of the year from the recently completed 2013-14 season will be held on 25 June 2014, when the judge will be Darren Pullman. Entries should either be handed in on CD/DVD or memory stick at the meeting of 18 June or sent via e-mail to croydoncameraclub@gmail.com by midnight on Saturday, 21 June 2014. A maximum of three images are allowed and only those entered in the last six internal monthly competitions (i.e. the 2013-14 season) are eligible.

It is one of those occasions where the competition is held as a single class and the Mees Trophy will be presented to the person who, in the opinion of the judge, has submitted the best image of the evening. Certificates will also be awarded to the runners up. So is it an unequal contest, pitching Standard Class against Advanced? Yes it is. Last year, the competition was won by someone in the Standard Class and it is far from the first time when one of our newer members has eclipsed those more experienced. If anything, it is the Advanced workers who have something to prove!

Nor is it a given that that a shot which did well during the monthly competition will do so again this time. Last year's winning image scored 9 in its initial outing, so if you have a shot which you consider was unfairly judged the first time and is worth more, keep faith with it and submit it again. You never know.

All members should have a printed copy of the competition rules, which are also included with this post or can be viewed on the club's website along with the general instructions. (Apart from the change to the Bamber Trophy for monochrome images when only prints were eligible this year, the rules are unaltered since last season.)

Entries should consist of up to three images which should conform to the following criteria:

  • Maximum dimensions of 1,024 pixels horizontally and 768 pixels vertically
  • sRGB colour space
  • Image file names should be a two digit number to show the order in which it is to be projected, followed by a space and the title (e.g. 01 Rusty Nail.jpg).

It is recommended that you save your files with the JPEG quaility setting set to its maximum level. The JPEG standard was initially designed to reduce the file sizes of images and one way in in which it does this is by removing information during the compression process. Using the highest quality setting ensures that the extent to which this occurs is minimised.

Not all entries received adhere to the above requirements, with the omission of colour space settings or incorrect file names being the most common errors. In the case of the former, the competition software does an automatic correction, although there might be unexpected changes in colours as a result.

There is advice on the club's website about preparing images for competition, but if you are unsure of any aspect of processing your entries you should speak to a Council member.
