This morning I met with Atif Choudhury who has just opened the Cafe Adagio in Addiscombe. Atif is keen to promote arts and music at his cafe and has offered the club an opportunity for members to put on a selling exhibition. I need to return to establish how many prints we could display, but I estimate that there is sufficient space for about 20. At present, I have provisionally agreed that the club will put on a display during February 2015 and that all images will be framed. I anticipate that people can use the Ikea frames we have for our annual exhibition, but if you sell a picture you will need to acquire a replacement frame if you also need it for our exhibition at the Clocktower Gallery. There is no charge for hosting the exhibition and all Atif asks is 20% commission for any pictures which are sold.

This is an excellent chance to promote the club as well as provide potential for members to benefit financially. Alternatively, we could agree that anything raised will go to charity if people prefer. There will be a selection process for the images and Atif will have a final say on anything which is put on display. There will also be an opening event to promote the exhibition and anyone who has images included in the show will be expected to attend.

I will have more details when I have spoken further with Atif, but anyone interested in participating should respond to this thread initially together with the images they wish to be considered.

This is the the interior of the cafe where the pictures will be hung. There is currently another exhbition there by a local artist. If it looks a bit bare, that is because many of the works have been sold, with £1,000 having been raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Cafe Adagio is in Lower Addiscombe Road, very close to Addiscombe Tram stop.

Raising money for one or more good causes through the use of skills would be an excellent way to contribute to the celebration of the club's 125th anniversary in 2015.

Are we not submitting our annual exhibition framed prints on Jan 14th which are then exhibited at the Clock House in March? Wouldnt this limit the number of potential submissions unless more frames are purchased for February?

Short answer, no.

Exhibition prints submitted on 14 January are as for a normal competition, i.e. in mounts only without frames. After judging, the prints will be returned to be put into frames for the exhibition hanging on 1 March. Admittedly it will be tight, but frames could be used for both exhibitions unless any are sold at the Cafe Adagio.

The alternative is that the Cafe Adagio exhibition is staged after the club's exhibition, but that does depend on who is willing to sign up to participate and reaching a general consensus of what we want to do. It will also depend on what else is scheduled for the cafe as to when we can get a later slot.

An exhibition at the Café Adagio seems to be a good idea for all concerned, and I am happy to put forward copies of 'Autumn Colours' and 'Still Standing'. If space limits us to one print, then the monochrome 'Still Standing' is the stronger image.

Thanks to Bill and Wally for their responses. We could have discussions with Atif about having a mixture of some pictures being sold for personal gain and others for charity if others wished to donate the proceeds.

I should have commented on the commercial aspects of the Adagio issue rather than simply applauding the joint opportunities. The owner's cut of 20% is appropriate for an exhibition at this level, and I do not object to some going to the club or to a nominated charity. Selling photographic prints is unlikely to make any of us rich, but I suggest that if anyone does make a sale then he or she should be entitled at the very least to recover the cost of materials and perhaps withhold an 'author's fee'; perhaps 50% of the selling price. The remainder could go to the club, which is the vehicle for the exhibition, or split with a nominated charity. I would be surprised if the exhibition leads to any sales, so I do not think we should get too exercised about how we should share the profits.

Thanks, Bill, this looks like a sensible approach. As you say, "an author's fee" could be optional if anyone wants to support a charity. I suspect that to make any sales at this location we will have to keep prices relatively low.
