Lumiere London - January 14 to 17

Postby Mike Farley » Sun 10 Jan 2016, 17:16

This event featuring illumations in various parts of central London runs between 14 - 17 January. I am not sure of my availability on those dates, but there is nothing to stop a group organising themselves to go as a party.

It looks absolutely marvelous.
I would want to go on the first available dry night, hopefully Thursday night.
Could then go again if the shots don't pan out.
Thank you Mike.
What camera setting would one use apart from automatic?

The trick is to find an exposure which does not burn out the lights and the actual settings could be different for each location. That's where your rear LCD panel comes in, as you can take test shots initially and review the results making sure to inspect the histogram. One or two small blinkies might be OK, but you could be in trouble if there are more or a large area is covered, especially if you are shooting JPEG. Raw will provide more latitude in post process. It would be best to shoot either aperture priority and use exposure compensation to make ajustments, or go fully manual. If shooting handheld, set ISO to Auto so that shutter speeds will not drop too low, although a tripod or some other means of support will allow longer shutter speeds at or near base ISO.

This looks interesting, thanks for the post. May venture to Kings Cross straight from work.

I went up this evening. Kings Cross was good for photography and the exhibits are fairly close together. Be aware of the biting wind off the canal. We also looked at the Oxford Street to Piccadilly displays - good though not so photogenic.

Thanks for the info, Graham. I am hoping to get up there on Sunday and will head to King's Cross as you suggest.

I went again Friday - this time to Leicester square. Colourful but in your face, rather like houses done up with Christmas decorations. Similar Westminster Abbey. Good to look at but fewer opportunities for photographic creativity. BUT a friend went up Sat and said it was horribly crowded. Some access closed, difficult to see.

i braved the piercing cold wind on a clear Thursday night to visit the King's Cross illuminations that I though were "OKish". I did get a few reasonable images in spite of the crowds having to fight for position.
Having seen the wonderful images in today's Metro paper, I should have gone on to the OXford street area for the "colourful but in your face" images that I would have preferred, but was exhausted by the cold more than anything else and the crowds.
Here are a couple of my images from the King's cross circuit.
