I visited the Diane Arbus' Exhibition "in the beginning" organised by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York at the Hayward Gallery to view some 100 + images.
The image were in two sections with some 60 images in the first section while the second had some 40 + images.
Sadly no photography was allowed at the gallery for me capture the essence of the exhibition.
Before jotting down my views, I read a synopsis of Diane Arbus' life and work which gave me some understanding of where she was coming from.
This made me much more sympathetic to her images on exhibition.
https://www.thecut.com/2016/07/diane-arbus-c-v-r.html90% of her first images in this exhibition were shot with a 35mm Nikon F camera which Arbus then developed and produced gelatin silver print (24.8 × 16.9 cm).
These small black & white images draws the observers closer in to try and capture all the detail.
Diana started this part of her photographic journey by taking images at a wax work museum that included James Dean and 2 or 3 others that are exhibited here.
Some of the early images were experiments with lighting while others were grab shots of people in NY.
Soon though, Diana was confident enough to take full on shots of New Yorkers.
Arbus came into her own when she started photographing the disenfranchised of New York that involved getting to know her subjects.
Among the smaller prints, the second section hosted "A box of ten photographs" consisting of large square format images that included Identical twins, Roselle, N.J. 1967, Jewish giant at home with his parents in the Bronx, N.Y. 1970, A young Brooklyn family going for a Sunday outing, N.Y.C. 1966 and more, all on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum here in London. Another iconic photograph in square format, also shot with a 2 ¼-inch square-format Rolleiflex camera was Child with toy hand grenade in Central Park, N.Y.C. 1962.
The Diane Arbus Exhibition closes on the 6 May 2019. So you will have to be quick if you want to catch it.
