We were there in the morning when the light was perfect for bring out all the shapes and textures in the mountain.

If you look on my blog, I have an infrared version of the same scene. It turns out that infrared works well with mountains.

Reducing the exposure until it's pitch black would be one way, though I am tempted to put it into a competition as is, just to see if a judge is brave enough to give it the mark it deserves...

That'd be what... one point for the camera being the right way up, another because of the small bit of blue sky, and maybe being generous and giving one more because if you squint real hard you don't notice the incredibly dirty sensor? Don't think I've seen an image get 3 before.

It was intended to be ambiguous. It could just be that you have achieved perfection.

Technical faults are catnip to many judges as it gives them an excuse to mark down an otherwise satisfactory image. In fact I know of a few who will even resort to inventing such issues so that they can justify a low mark. A judge ought to award a 12 simply for allowing them so much opportunity to let rip.

I have. Some years ago someone submitted an admittedly indifferent shot which consisted of just two tones, black and white. The judge was unequivocal and to the point:

"You're in the Advanced Class. You know better than this. Three."

If the challenge is to go low, it might just have got harder. You will be needing a brave judge.
