PAD 165 - Scissor Arches

Day 165 and another visit to Wells Cathedral, this time to capture the amazing scissor arches. They are a mediaeval solution to providing structural rigidity without which the cathedral would have collapsed. Despite their age, they look surprisingly modern.

Love the way my eye roams around the image amongst all the shapes. Good eye and Im impressed they allowed tripods in the cathedral.

Thanks, Paul. I was fascinated by these arches, although it took a while to work out the best composition.

Wells is not alone in allowing tripods and does not have an entry fee, although it does ask £3 for a photography permit regardless of whether a tripod is used. I could have used one in Winchester Cathedral in the past if I had wanted (and had it with me!). On that occasion there was a shot in the crypt which I could not get simply as the light levels were too low and I had not gone properly prepared.

I suspect that most places which ban tripods are the more popular locations where the could become a trip hazard when there are a lot of people around.
