#56 - Mushroom Valley

Postby davidc » Tue 26 Feb 2013, 10:28

Sometimes there are days where I have a simple idea and it becomes so much more interesting than I ever imagined.

Today I thought I'd try some macro shots of a field mushroom - yep, the rock and roll lifestyle continues - and found the level of detail and layering really interesting. The ridges almost looked like valleys and I thought I'd go with that as the shot.

However when I stuck it in photoshop and tried inverting the colours it gave me this. SO much more interesting, it looks like... well, nothing I've really seen before!

Welcome to Mushroom Valley :)

Your experimentation with this 365 is definitely paying dividends, its a great macro image. I would never have guessed it was a mushroom.

I'm also considering a mini/side project, title pending, about taking common objects/scenes and seeing how otherworldly they look in negative form.

Last night's shot was taken but I was far too tired to muck about with all the PP malarky. Hopefully I can get it uploaded tonight along with today's effort.

Unlikely, I'll be at work til at least 6.30, which means home by about 7.30 in the best case scenario. Doesn't leave long to eat/get changed etc.
Also I've been asked to take photographs for someone at work tonight and I think it'll take a while - been doing 12+ hr days since January so I try to grab sleep when I can :)

Been a frustrating start to the year.

It's to your credit that you are managing to find time for your PAD project. That said, I cannot help but wonder how you can cope with such a heavy work commitment for an extended period. There does not seem to be much in the way of work life balance, which must be as much in the employer's interest as the employee's.

To some extent it comes with the territory for working in the city (although my wife is a civil servant and frequently under more pressure than I am), the start of year tends to be busy here and this one has been worse than normal. On a good day I can be home by 6.30, eat & clean by 7.30 leaving a few hours to plan, shoot, edit & post the photo. But that doesn't leave time for much else. Then there are the bad days...

#57 - Colour Pop

Postby davidc » Thu 28 Feb 2013, 15:06

Spotted some cheap colour pencils in the supermarket and figured I must be able to create a shot out of them somehow.

Cut them in half so they would fit in a shallow glass bowl and added a little lemonade to create the bubbles. Lit from opposite the camera, YN560-II at 1/32 power pointing at the bowl less than 10cm above it - had to choose my angle carefully to avoid glaring reflections.

This was my entry into the work photo challenge competition, on the theme of LEGO :)

I bought a couple of cheap, random single figures from the newsagent and ended up getting a swimmer and an armoured knight... It was fun coming up with a scenario I could photograph them in and I'm tempted to try this again later in the year, maybe as a side project.

Don't have a lot of time for photography at the moment, stupid work is getting in the way :(
