This robin came amazingly close and it was a challenge to get the my standard zoom lens far enough away so that I could take the shot at its minimum focussing distance.

Robins do tend to be more tolerant of humans than most other birds - have you tried getting close to a magpie even with a long lenses on the camera?

A few years ago I came across a robin in Park Hill park. I walked up to within four feet taking photographs (with a moderate zoom). I managed about a dozen as I slowly moved around it. It eventually felt he'd done enough and flew off to a higher, less accessible branch.

I am aware of the friendly nature of robins. The shot was taken on the outside terrace at a cafe where the birds often come close in the hope of food. A.chaffinch approached as soon as I sat down and was just as near as as the robin. Unfortunately, it did not allow enough time to get my camera out, nor did it pose on the same spot again.
