A trip to Guildford to see the SPA bi-ennial exhibition yielded an unexpected photo opportunity. The previous day I had seen the Wintershall Passion play featured on the news when it was performed in Trafalgar Square and unknown to me the same cast were were repeating the play in Guildford. It is certainly a dramatic experience and with much smaller crowds, quite an intimate experience. Much of the action takes place at the bottom of the High Street, but for the Crucifixion the actor playing Jesus drags his cross up the hill to the church where the finale takes place. It certainly gives a very authentic feel as the crowd follows on behind.
Most of those taking part are amateurs, with the only professional involved being the person who takes the part of Jesus. For the most part, you would not know it is mainly being performed by amateur players, it is that well done. Whatever your beliefs, it is definitely a worthwhile experience and a dramatic (in every sense) telling of the story.
