Hi Tom,
Blurred propellers confirm that Rose's camera settings work, or did you try other combinations too?

Hi Iggy,

I didn't use Rose's settings although they are a very good starting point and not far off what I do. Some of her functions on the 5D mk3 are not the same as mine so it's a case of adapting things to suit the equipment you have.

My main considerations are base firstly on the light of the sky so I use AWB but increase the exposure by about 1 - 1½ stops according to the sky. That will bring out more definition in the planes.

I found that 1/250 second shutter speed often stopped some of the propellers so I often drop that down to 150/200th but try to ensure that the panning is effective.

Regarding other settings for jets, yes I up'd the shutter speed to between 1,000 and 1,500th second. That always does the job but in some conditions you might need to consider upping the ISO to 200 (my norm) or 400.

What was useful was taking a back-up camera for some of the sider angle ground shots, that saved changing lenses especially when there is drizzle around.

Hope this helps.

Very nice images Tom ! :)
It was the first time in 34 years that I hadn't been in Biggin Hill for an air show - fortunately we had family visiting so I had other things to occupy my mind. Our weather has been a lot better than yours though, I'm happy to say ;) :D

Just a couple from the day, the first time I had been to a airshow. I now know I need a better lens.

The video shown on the BBC stopped once the car was floating, although presumably it did eventually sink. It was unclear how the driver and any passengers got out, but unless there was a sunroof it would have involved opening the doors. Either way I cannot see how anyone inside would have avoided getting very wet.
