Re: Windows 10

This morning, while I was urgently trying to find some information on the Internet, Windows 10 zapped my connection with an automated download for an update to the operating system. The sensible thing, of course, would be for Windows to run these downloads in the background and allow browsing by the user to take priority. It does not help where multiple computers share the connection, but at least it would be something.

Given that Microsoft has not seen sense, I have now brought the timing of updates under my control by telling Windows 10 that I am on a metered connection which stops unscheduled downloads. It can be found under Settings, but not in either of the places where it might seem sensible to put it, i.e. "Network and Internet" or "Update & Security". No, it is under "Devices", bizarrely in the section which deals with printers and scanners. I do not think that Microsoft wants people to find it.

[quote="Iggy"]Our IT department at KCL has advised not to install Win 10 for the moment and to stick with Win 7 for the time being especially if we have old equipment, such as my 5 year + old laptop./quote]
I updated my wife's six year old laptop a couple of days ago. In computing terms it is fairly low spec, having a twin core Ultra Low Voltage processor which is not the most powerful. There have been no complaints. So far. :D
