Street Photography - Guidelines and Law

I came across these two articles on PetaPixel, which both relate to street photography in their different ways.

The first one lays out a sensible set of guidelines for shooting on the street.

The second one is more worrying, albeit is indicative of the times we live in, potentially introducing a new grey area between what is acceptable and what is not. As the article says, in the UK taking photographs in public places of strangers is not illegal. If the principles laid out in the first article are followed and the photographer uses their common sense, hopefully the constable will agree. Even in Nottinghamshire.

PetapIxel is on something of a roll at the moment and has just published a video by Practical Photography magazine about taking photographs in public places. The second part of the video has an interview with Inspector Malcolm Graham of the Cambridgeshire Constabulary who offers some very good advice. I would say that this is essential viewing for anyone venturing onto the streets with their camera. It has been some years since we had the government sponsored crackdown on photographers taking pictures in public places, but the sensitivities which gave rise to that are as relevant as ever.
