Somerset's best kept secret ??

Postby Rose » Mon 21 Nov 2016, 18:48

The Somerset Carnivals are regarded as the largest illuminated procession in the world and take place every November all across the county. We went to the Wells City Carnival on Friday night - two and a half hours of the most incredible sights and sounds - it was mad !! I took over 300 photos of which I have uploaded a selection here: https://500px.com/roseatkinson/galleries/carnival

That's an impressive display, Rose. Looking at the EXIF data of the images, it is clearly a very well lit scene.

Did you have to do much post capture processing before uploading?

Well lit is an understatement ! There are so many lights on the floats you can feel the heat from several feet away !!
Even so I could have done with a flash as many of the performers were mostly backlit of course, so I had to lighten them up in post processing. I did some other processing, as I usually do.

Hi Rose,
Some nice images there with great control so that the light bulbs on the floats were not over blown.
I would be grateful to know what camera settings you used: shutter, aperture, ISO? Wide angle lens I guess?
Pergaps you would like to do a Member's talk on night photography for your CCC mates!
In November, I did attend the second half of the Lord Mayor's show in London in the afternoon (poor light, but not raining) but it was too fast and furious and images were poor. I should have used flash! Had a good time though chatting to some Americans.
By the way, my Aquarium Fish Photography talk is tomorrow. Thanks for your helpful advice on the video clips.
Thanks for sharing your images,
Iggy

PS: I guess you have seen our Christmas dinner images in Outings.

Hi Iggy

If you click on the individual images and scroll down, you can see the EXIF data for each shot. I used my Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 lens, set on f/4 and ISO 100. A lot of the highlights were blown, but I recovered them in LR as part of the processing.

It looks like you all had a good time at the dinner :) Good luck with your presentation tomorrow !

:) Good luck with your presentation tomorrow !

Hi Rose,
There was a surprisingly good turnout for my presentation of my adventures in “Aquarium Fish Photography & Beyond” perhaps largely because I have so many friends at the club. Had to put out many more chairs than the 22 originally arranged! A senior member who couldn’t get there actually phoned.
Apart from a couple of technical hiccups that were easily sorted, the presentation went well I think. There was plenty of feedback both at the tea break and afterwards as members came to chat and look at my Bonus print book. Using your idea of video clips worked well in my presentation where I used 4 out of the planned 5 that the audience enjoyed and it gave me a chance to catch my breath.
Some even wanted to have an outing to London Aquarium!
Facing the audience and using a remote control to advance the slides was a good idea too.
Lady Luck was also on my side as I picked up a raffle prize of chocolates that I didn’t take, as I had won a bottle of wine 2 weeks earlier.
Hope to see you sometime.
Best wishes,
Iggy

Hi Rose,
Thanks. Just thought that I would share a couple of the slides with you.

By the way, as you are a fully paid up member of the CCC, you could just for the fun of it enter our next PDI competition on 14 Dec!
Hope you do!

Best wishes,
Iggy
