Re: #45 - A Billion Bubbles

Postby Paul Heester » Mon 18 Feb 2013, 14:15

I love the bubbles in bubbles effect. It has a good sci-fi feel to it. Ive used lemonade before in a glass dish and used an LED torch to light it, its unpredictable but its all about experimentation.

davidc wrote:Four days of photos to share so here we go!

Wanted to try bubble photography and although it's a hit and miss process some of the shots are pretty cool.
Setup is really easy - prop up a shallow glass dish with about 2cm of water and drop oil into it. Swish it around to get some interesting patterns. Whatever you put underneath will form the diffuse background and then illuminate from the side using a flash. Simple!

After adding more and more oil I found that rather than getting loads of separate bubble clusters they started merging getting bubbles inside bubbles.

Re: #47- Crocus Stamen

I had half planned to take snowdrops or crocuses for my own 52 week project this week but seeing your shot and Mike's snowdrops I am changing the plan. Brought my camera and tripod to work today and will be going for some after dark architecture shots.

#49 - Thames Mist

Postby davidc » Wed 20 Feb 2013, 09:01

I pass this every day on the way to work. Sometimes - most of the time - it's grey, miserable and raining. Sometimes it's nice and sunny. Today there was a strange mix of clouds and mist with the foreground dark and dim as though it was were about to rain but with mist blanketing Tower Bridge in the background. Then the sun burst through and the whole scene lit up.

Created this really unusual silhouette of Tower Bridge and the Thames and the sun breaking through in the background.

#50 - High Keys

Postby davidc » Wed 20 Feb 2013, 09:03

Initially I wanted to create a high contrast pure monochrome shot but I really think the red streak of felt where the keys are mounted sets it off.

Well 50 days down, 315 to go!

Atmospheric shot there. I also cross London Bridge each day and seen some amazing sunrises & sunsets. Just need to capture them on camera now!

#51 - Pilgrimage

Postby davidc » Wed 20 Feb 2013, 22:01

I'm reading a book where the main premise is the Black Death, which called ~30% of the western world in the middle ages, in fact killed 99% of the population - how might history have changed if such an event occurred? It's a good book and it discusses things that although I'm loosely familiar with, I don't know a lot about it prompted me to do some research.

One section describes an Islamic hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, to visit the Kaaba. This is one of the most sacred sites in Islam and when I googled it to learn more, saw some spectacular images of people praying in concentric circles around it.

Inspired me to recreate the scene using some iron filings and a cube magnet :)

Representing the Kaaba at Mecca, the holiest site in Islam, and the pilgrims praying around it as a magnet and iron filings might just be one of the most courageous photos I have seen. Not many of us would risk a fatwa in pursuit of our photography.
