#126 - Clipper Butterfly

Postby davidc » Tue 07 May 2013, 10:36

Spent a couple of hours at the Sensational Butterflies attraction at the Natural History Museum - good fun but very, very hot. And people saw my camera, assumed I knew what I was doing and got me to take dozens of snapshots for families enjoying the butterflies!

Very flattering though :)

Day 123 added, above, and today's shot -

I went for a walk after work - I just got out at a random tram stop and decided to explore. Sadly, despite the glorious sunset, there was nothing out there that caught my eye and even a landscape shot of said sunset was out of the question - too many ugly houses.

So I decided to get more lighting practice, trying to feather and soften the light to bring out the texture of this nearly-ready-for-the-bin peach.

Pretty pleased with the result and getting a different view of the British Museum :)

You did well to get the shadows and NO people. The place is usually teeming whenever I am there.

Love the result but it's been the most stressful so far and I finished at 23.59 :)

Strobist - complicated :D

I was holding two 1m long pieces of white plumbing pipe wrapped in EL wire but they weren't bright enough (hence lightsabers added completely in post)

Two YN560II's, one right/left and each gelled red/green on 1/2 power through umbrella.
YN460 in front of me adding backlight.

But that wasn't enough so after I'd nailed the side shots I reshot my head using both YN560's side on at head height, ungelled, to light my hood, then blended the two shots in photoshop.

You have brought out the textures in peach and the wood very well.

Thanks - it took ages standing around waiting, eliciting funny looks from people and museum staff wondering why I was just standing there.

Not 100% happy with this but I still tried to concentrate on the lighting side even though I'm getting a bit bored of taking flower shots (I've done loads recently, want to do something different!)

Anyway, here it is -

Apparently it's an iris I've since learned!

Lighting the background yellow was an absolute pain, I needed to use multiple gels overlapping to get it so it wasn't eye wateringly lemon yellow!

Lit from above by a YN560II on 1/16th through an umbrella, from underneath by a YN460 on 1/64th and the background lit by a YN560II on 1/16th with too many gels to mention :)

#129 - Boiling Point

Postby davidc » Thu 09 May 2013, 23:47

I've been trying to get good monochrome shots this week for a variety of reasons and not done particularly well I feel so gave it one last shot tonight. A simmering pan of water is the subject and although it doesn't really work in mono I still quite like it - it's a beast with a thousand eyes. Or bubblewrap, depending on your imagination :)

Used a flash to freeze the motion.
