Is Apple giving up on Aperture? No reason to panic just yet, according to Thom Hogan.

Here's an update that might be of interest. I've not seen Apple's announcement but MacWorld is generally a trustworthy source of information.

Aperture's demise is being widely reported without any denials from Apple. What will be of interest to Mac users is what is going to replace it and how legacy issues will be handled. I cannot imagine that Apple will want to leave users in the lurch and surrender to Adobe.

"Photo's" will replace iPhoto and Aperture and be very much linked the Apple's iCloud product. OS X and IOS will have a common interface through the cloud.
Leaving user's in the lurch is no concern with Apple - witness their changes to their movie management software which they changed overnight leaving some of the most useful tools from their "upgraded" product. Hopefully they will have learned from that debacle.

I'll be observing with the outcome with detached interest. Whatever it does, Apple is bound to upset someone and I am expecting howls of anguish along the way.

I will probably be less detached than you but having spent so such effort in getting LightRoom up and running I won't be changing soon.

I couldn't agree more although considering there previous experience with iMovie they might be less inclined to make more radical changes.

A move to new software not initiated by the user seems pretty radical to me.

We'll have to wait and see. The new software is due in the Fall (autumn to you and me!).
