You can certainly get some "interesting" moments on planes. In 1974 I flew with Turkish Airlines which had already experienced two major crashes* that year (including the disaster over Paris) on one of their remaining DC-10s. The pilot aborted the first approach into Istanbul airport, which was a bit worrying i the circumstances.

Coming back from Edinburgh on one occasion, it required three attempts to land at London City Airport. The runway there is quite short, so wind direction is a significant factor. While we were on the first descent, the pilot decided that a change in the wind meant that he needed to approach from the opposite direction. The second time we were literally just a few feet above the runway when he revved the engines and started climbing as he had decided that a tail wind could push us beyond the end of the tarmac into the dock. He eventually put the plane down with a bit of a bump, but if we had not landed that time it was going to be a diversion to Southend for us.

* The airline went on to have a third fatal crash on an internal flight later in the year after I had returned home. I had also taken an internal flight with them on the same type of plane and I sometimes wonder if that was the actual aircraft which crashed.

44. Inle Lake Fisherman

A fisherman returns home at sunset. Inle Lake, Myanmar.

Essentially straight out of camera.

One of the children from the people who live their lives entirely in homes on wooden stilts in a fishing village on Inle Lake. She looked quite sassy.

46. Golden Orb-Weaving Spider

Postby davidc » Wed 29 Oct 2014, 11:33

I've uploaded this one directly to the site rather than Flickr, mainly so people can choose to click on the link if they choose. It shouldn't load automatically and scare the pants off any arachnophobes out there :)

In our hotel at Inle Lake we were pottering back to our lake-side room after a hard-day's sightseeing when my wife grabbed me and shouted. One of these was hanging in mid-air, a web stretching a good three feet from bush to tree. Once we'd seen one, looking around we saw more. And more. AND MORE. There were dozens, maybe hundreds of them. All hanging there. Some eating dragonflies.

Others just watching.

Waiting.

It's a golden orb-weaving spider and, fully grown, passes a 22cm leg span. This one was at least 15-18cm. It makes the strongest and largest webs in the world.

I can see the line where you added a bit extra to the left side of the frame. What I normally do is increase the canvas area and then extend the selection by one pixel before applying Content Aware Fill which prevents that happening. Good shot.

You'd be arrested for taking a shot like that in this country.

I saw it too after I uploaded it :(

Will have to fix and re upload. First time I have used content aware fill though, it was impressive

Yes, it can work well, although it tends to be best when there are not too many elements in the adjacent area. Sometimes things are replicated in a way which makes no sense, so you either have to resort to other methods such as cloning to tidy up afterwards or filling in with smaller increments.

48. Spearfisher & Crow

Or should that be "Speared Fisher"?

Taken in Manadalay from atop the longest teakwood bridge in the world, U Bein.
