Sony made its latest financial presentation last week and included a prediction about the number of sensors it thinks it is going to sell. Sony makes a lot of sensors and unless you have a Canon DSLR, the chances are that Sony will be responsible for the imaging chip. Even Canon has long used Sony's wares in its compacts. Most of these imaging devices will not be going into cameras, well not products whose sole purpose is image capture and cameras are a decreasing part of the market. Thom Hogan has analysed the figures and his conclusion is that the only way camera manufacturers can survive is by going upmarket and raising prices. The good news for consumers is that current cameras are already good enough for most purposes, but that only adds to the manufacturer's problems in working out who their customers will be in future.
