Given the furore when a photo journalist is discovered to have staged a story* or manipulated an image, you would have thought it would be professional suicide to do it. Yet it is still happening and Giovanni Troilo is the latest to be stripped of a prize in a major competition, on this occasion one run by World Press Photo. His photo story "La Ville Noir - The Dark Heart of Europe" was supposed to have been shot in Charleroi in Belgium, yet at least one image was not from there at all and another featured the photographer's nephew in a contrived scene. Initially the latter shot did not prompt the disqualification, but the later discovery of the formerultimately did for the photographer.

* In this instance it did turn out to be a story rather than verité.
