Low-light Stage Photography

Postby Mata » Mon 16 Mar 2015, 15:01

When I did my first photographs at the Pena Flamenco evening back in October I remember I made a complete hash of it. :)

There has been a gradual increase in the quality of the images taken. Still experimenting with the settings and camera lens. Since it’s only on once a month it’s a long wait for the next session.

I think the ideal lens would have to be the 2.8/70-200mm on a full frame camera. So much easier to isolate the subject, take a close-up and move to full stage quickly so you don’t end up missing what could be an interesting shot.

The first two images were taken with a 1.8/50mm on a DX body and the third with an 18-300 zoom at 70mm with ISO at 1600 and EV at +2. There is plenty of noise which is inevitable. I have noticed when cleaning the noise the image becomes softer so have to readjust the sharpener, clarity and saturation to compensate.

The 18-300 is not an ideal lens for low light but I thought I would experiment with it anyway. At least I am beginning to understand the strengths and limitations of the lens I have at the moment.

If anyone enjoys flamenco music and dance the website is:

It's on every second Sunday of the month in Victoria.
