Forum Down

Postby Mike Farley » Sun 19 Apr 2015, 10:56

Apologies to one and all for the lack of the forum over the last day or so. The hosting service made a change with very little notice which meant that we could not notify users beforehand. Moreover, the company added to the problems as it does not seem to have implemented the update in a particularly elegant way, although I do not currently have all the details.

It did not help that the error message generated by the hosting service seemed to suggest that the problem was at the user's end.

As a matter of interest, did you have to do the local DNS data flush or did the site reinstate itself automatically?

I was worried the site had been hacked. Very glad to see it back up again.

I must admit that I was sceptical of the claim until I tried to access the forum, got the error page, flushed the cache as per the instructions and immediately the forum became available.

There appears to be an issue with e-mail notifications for updates not being generated, which is being investigated.

I did flush ( ;) ) but it didn't seem to help.

I tried my link to the forum this morning and got the error message again. It only seems to have resolved itself in the last half hour or so.

Am I glad to be able to get my forum fix

Everything now appears to be back to normal and I have started receiving e-mail notifications again. The latter problem appears to have occurred due to one of the anti-virus companies, Trend Micro, arbitrarily deciding to block the e-mails as an anti-spam measure. The strange thing is that I do not use Trend Micro, but it is possible that it is functioning somewhere at an intermediary on the route between the forum hosting service and my ISP.

Many thanks to Peter Boughton for sorting everything out. I would not even know where to begin to resolve the e-mail problem and I have no idea how he discovered it. We are all indebted to him for the extent of his technical knowledge and his willingness to apply it on our behalf.
