According to Thom Hogan, the answer is in the affirmative, although only for certain specialised tasks. For anything else, you really do not need to spend that much money and have something you can carry in your pocket which will produce good results in most circumstances.

BTW, his maths is a bit wonky. The kit lens on an Olympus E-M10 has a focal length range of 14-42. With a 2x crop factor that means the full frame equivalent is 28 at the wide end, not 24 as he claims.
