Elliott Erwitt Exhibitions

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 21 Apr 2015, 11:13

No, not a typo, there really are two exhibitions featuring Elliott Erwitt's photography opening in London over the next few days.

The first is part of the Sony World Phorography Awards exhibition at Somerset House which opens on 24 April, when Erwitt will be receiving a lifetime achievement award.

The second is at Beetles and Huxley and comprises images of Marilyn Monroe. This opens on 28 April.

I will be taking in both one day next week, either 28 or 30 April. The Beetles and Huxley show is free, but there is a charge for the Sony one for which there is a weekday concession rate of £5.

Would anyone care to join me? We can either have a sandwich or meal at lunch, although there is always a pub to enjoy a beer. We can also take in a bit of street photography after seeing the shows - Soho is just around the corner from Beetles and Huxley. If you are interested, state if you have a preference for the date when responding to this thread.

I would like to join you on the 28th. I probably won't be able to do more than take in the Sony exhibition though. :D

Hi Mike/Nina,

I'm planning to pop in to the Sony exhibition today, but my timings are a bit uncertain, some time in the afternoon given it's 10am already.

Cheers,

Graham

Hi Graham

I have only just seen this, but Nina and I were at the exhibition this morning. We had some great fun discussing the shots and working out which were likely to succeed with the average camera club judge, or not. We saw the Elliott Erwitt part of the show at the end and it was a blast of fresh air compared to some of what we had looked at before. Even Nina was impressed, so it had to be good. ;)

Hope you enjoyed the show as well.

The trip to Beetles+Huxley was also worthwhile as some of Erwitt's better known shots had been printed using a platinum palladium process, which renders deep black tones. The exhibition itself was free, but you need deep pockets if you actually want to buy any of the prints, which start at £2,500 for one of the Marilyn Monroe shots at a 11" x 14" size going up to £22,500 for a 30" x 40" version of one of the platinum palladium shots.

Thanks to Nina for her company today. Here's a shot I took at lunchtime.
