Peak District weekend in autumn

Postby Paul Heester » Thu 14 May 2015, 15:46

All

As some of you may know I visited the Peak District in February this year and had a great time shooting numerous locations in a relatively small area. With that in mind Im proposing a club weekend this autumn, provisionally Friday 6th November to Monday 9th. Would anyone be interested in joining me?

Travelling
Would be driving myself so could take another 2 passengers (maybe 3). Journey time around 4 hours from the Croydon area. Most points of interest are within 30 mins drive and we could plan a day covering a certain area and its points of interest. Most of the interesting things to shoot are close to car parks so its not that arduous. Mam Tor (the highest point in the park) took less than 30 minutes of uphill walking and that was the most distance I covered.

Accommodation
I stayed here - http://www.yorkshire-bridge.co.uk/ - and can thoroughly recommend it. Its centrally located, offers good rooms, a very hearty breakfast & good evening meals. Its not group accommodation like the Brecon Beacons but there is plenty of space in the bar (which has free WIFI) if we wanted to gather for group chats. All extra meals & bar drinks can be added to room bill to make life easier. Double rooms are approx £200 for the 3 nights including breakfast.

What to shoot
Spoilt for choice! It has gritstone ridges, forests, open moorland, dams, reservoirs (Talybont Reservoir is a few minutes walk from Yorkshire Bridge), modest waterfalls and plenty more. An online search will give you far more details. Sunrise (just after 7am) and sunset (around 4.30pm) are respectable times also.

I used this book - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0992683424 - as our main guide and found it invaluable. The Amazon reviews will give you an insight to how others found it helpful, especially having postcodes for the nearest car parks for satnav use.

Would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this potential trip.

Hi Paul

Great suggestion and I am definitely interested. Tripadvisor backs up your opinion of the hotel and the photography guide book looks excellent. It's a pity that there are not a few more like it for other parts of the country. I could definitely have done with something like that when I went to Dartmoor last year.

I see that there is another one in the same series for the Yorkshire Dales, a part of the world I know better than the Peak District, so I have ordered that as well. A third book by the same author for the Lake District appears to be unavailable on Amazon at present, but I would imagine that is worth getting as well if it can be found.

It turns out that the Lake District book is available after all and I have found it here:

Rigu also has the Peak District book in stock.

http://rigu.co.uk/photographers-guide-t ... -e-bowness

Both places are slightly cheaper than purchasing through Amazon and Rigu offers a 10% discount by using the promotion code "PHOBLOG10".

It turns out that the author of the various photography guide books is the cousin of Rigu's proprietor, so although the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District books are currently shown as being out of stock, it seems likely that new supplies will be received soon. I only found them on the website via Google and the owner says that he does not publicise them as he does not want to get into the book business.

Excellent suggestion Paul, a place I'd hope to visit this year as our annual vacation but circumstances curtailed that idea. Please put forward some preferred dates and hopefully I could throw my hat into the ring.

My thinking behind the proposed dates of Friday 6th November to Monday 9th is because there is a school half term on 23-31 October. This is turn makes each weekend either side more expensive and availability probably more limited, plus it could be busier at popular locations. I also did various Flickr searches for other Peak District images and the autumnal colours are good over late Oct/early Nov so hoping this weekend will be the best option.

Thanks Paul, that's a great help as like many others I do the school run. This will now give plenty of time to make some arrangements.

Tom
