2015 Synchro pair

The RAF 2015 Synchro pair at Biggin Hill on Saturday. I'd welcome C&C... are the planes too central ?

While I think that a bit more space for the planes to "fly" into would be useful, for me that is not the main issue. Accepting that there is movement on the Spitfire's propellor, the Typhoon looks too static and the lack of context means that it is difficult to gauge the relationship between the two planes. Other than adding vapour trails coming off the wing tips, I am not sure what can be done about the former. It's a shame, as it is a good sharp shot which demonstrates the capabilities of the 5DIII and 100-400 combo, but somehow it does not quite convey the drama that you must have experienced when the planes were flying together.

Unfortunately the sky was very grey and bland with no clouds or definition behind the planes at this point of the display. There were no vapour trails. I'm not sure how you can make a jet look like it's moving when it's practically stalling to keep pace with a vintage prop ? This pic of the Typhoon is probably more dynamic as you can see it's moving against clouds as they show some motion blur... but it was of course flying faster on its own.

I was very impressed by the way, with how the new 100-400 performed on the day.

It works but the pilots do seem to be taking their life in their hands with the close proximity of the ground!!

I'm not sure how you can make a jet look like it's moving when it's practically stalling to keep pace with a vintage prop ?

That's why I suggested adding the vapour trails in PP. If it is any consolation, I am experiencing a similar difficulty with my shots from Brands Hatch the other week. There's more to these images than just pointing your camera at the subject if you want to transcend from the mainly pictorial to something with greater appeal. And I am not really sure what that difference is.

Hi Rose,

Nice images. I have practically the same images and as you say the sky was very grey. Without props turning the planes look like Airfix kits (I know, I have a few). That said, I did do what Mike suggested and put some vapour trails into the Typhoon shots and in my opinion because of the speed differential between the two types of planes it just didn't look right. As you have experimented with, a blurred background of the treeline might probably work better.

It was the first time I've used it for aircraft but I thought the Canon 100-400 performed very well. Like you I'm finding no end of uses for it.

I'll attach a couple of my images for interest sake only (still work to be done).

I love the Red Arrow shots, my only critsism in the top photo is personally i would have tried to leave more room on the right of the frame, as it is, to me it looks a bit like to model airfix planes hung in front of a grey background, but nether the less still a good image and one i would have loved to have taken.
