I find that when I am shooting, I tend to opt for the longer end of a lens and quite like a focal length of around 75. In fact, I own a lens of that focal length and would probably use it more if I could focus it more reliably - it's manual focus only and I know that others experience a similar difficulty with their copies. I also have a compact camera which has a fixed 50 lens on APS-C giving the same equivalent focal length and I have been using that fairly often since I bought it earlier this year.
The other thing that I have found is that I dislike the hassle of changing lenses when I am out shooting, so I tend to adapt to whatever happens to be on the camera, which is quite often a prime. However, since I stopped using my DSLR so much in favour of smaller mirrorless or compact models, I often have more than one camera with me so I use the one with the most appropriate lens for the subject. If I do use a zoom, I prefer something which has a bit more reach and am happy to give up a bit at the wide end. That's just personal preference of course and everyone will make their own choices.
I note that Hdew state that they will replace defective items, but as you will be using their warranty rather than Tamron's I would check that they would swap rather than repair a lens if you did not like the optical performance. There are also a number of sellers on eBay who have UK stock priced below Hdew and who claim to have 14 day return policies.

Re: Err 01
Hi Rose,
Sorry to hear your news. I note on the internet that many others have had similar problems. Looking at the relevant posts and on Canon's website there seems to be two problems. Firstly the faulty ribbon with appears to be your concern and secondly a glass issue.
The posts seem to imply that only the main serial numbers starting with 41xxxxx might be affected and for the glass issue a UT number under 1000. Both numbers can be seen on the camera end of the lens.
Out if interest, what numbers did your lens have?
Regards,
Tom
