Here We Go Again

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 16 Dec 2014, 07:56

There is yet another pretender to the throne, someone else has come up with a better alternative to JPEG. No doubt to go the way of its predecessors, none of which you will have heard of. Probably.

BPG doesn't role off the tongue as well as JPEG! Apart from that is looks interesting and has possibilities but it has a long way to go to snatch the crown from jpeg.

Quite agree. JPEG is ubiquitous and is good enough for most folk, who do not realise that it was orginally designed to minimise file size at the expense of image quality. That was an important consideraion back in the day when disk space was expensive and bandwidth limited, but not any more.
