Last year I was thinking of rationalising my camera gear and replacing my Canon DSLR with Olympus kit based on the E-M1. To that end, I borrowed an E-M1 for a weekend using Olympus' excellent "Test and Wow" scheme which gave me the opportunity to put the camera through its paces. What I found was that despite having phase detect AF, the performance of continuous AF was below par. The result was no sale for Olympus. I mentioned this to the Olympus reps at last month's trade show at The Societies' Convention and they told me to expect some news shortly. It turns out that the company has done a "Fuji" and released a firmware update which addresses the problem. If the reports of the new firmware are positive, I will take another look. It does, though, make me wonder why Olympus could not get the best out of the hardware at launch and has waited 18 months, which is half the likely production life ofthe camera, to effect an improvement.
