Camera Resolution

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 03 Mar 2015, 08:33

At the foot of Steve Gosling's article about Creativity on Luminous Landscape, it states that he is an Olympus Ambassador. What immediately struck me was that Gosling is primarily a landscape photographers, a group which has traditionally demanded the highest possible resolution from their cameras. I wondered if Gosling really practices what he preaches, so I went over to his website to see if he had included the EXIF data in any of his work, which he does. Below is an example from his recent work and not only was it taken on an Olympus E-M5, with a mere 16 MP at its disposal, he also used the 12-50 kit lens which most pundits on the forums will readily inform you is not one of Olympus' best optics.

Admittedly, the next shot I looked at was taken on a medium format Phase One, so Gosling does not shy away from using higher resolutions, and of course his relationship with Olympus means he has a financial incentive to use its equipment, but I doubt if a top flight photographer would unnecessarily compromise on image quality. As I have said before, it's not the camera.
