Widest Angle Lens Ever?

Postby Mike Farley » Sun 08 Mar 2015, 14:42

So far as I know, the new Canon 11-24 wideangle zoom has the shortest focal length (or equivalent) for any format. If you want to see what shooting a really wideangle lens is like, Keith Cooper has written a review at Northlight Images and includes plenty of shots taken at the widest setting.

In the meantime, Roger Cicala and Aaron Closz have conducted some MTF tests at LensRentals and it looks to be quite the performer, despite the optical challenges Canon must have faced. Apart from image quality, what both websites also agree about is that this lens is one heavy bit of kit. ;)

Weird seeing a review based in Leicester, I used to live there :)

Waiting for a review unit too, it's quite exciting and the previews/early reviews do suggest it's pretty good. Whether or not I need an extra 6mm on the wide end over a 17-40 remains to be seen but still, I wanna try it :D

My daughter studied and worked there for a few years, so I did a double take as well when I saw some of the shots.

Any idea when you will get a review unit?

No, but I'm meeting them tomorrow. I have quite a list of stuff I want to look at, though this is quite near the top!

Sounds as though you are making progress with Canon. The last I heard was that they were not responding to your requests.

Yeah it must only have been a day or two later and they opened up. It's just Olympus who refuse to reply (of those who I've contacted) which is bizarre because you'd think they'd welcome the attention?

Try working for them. ;)

As you say, you would have thought they would want to do all they can to generate sales.
